Things to do in Baltimore

Hi, this will be my first time attending MDF.  What's fun to do in Baltimore when not attending the fest?  Any museums or other places of interest?  I'm staying in the Inner Harbour area so anything close to that is prefered.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

uhmm shop for records at Own Guru II and a few other places in the area, get some crab and natty bos, drink with hobos and party in hotels.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

What comes to museums near the harbor the Amarican Visionary Art Museum is the best. Check it out. Also a must visit is Cross St. Market quite close to AVAM. Good place for some beers, oysters and sushi. There's also a submarine and a sailship Constellation worth visiting. You could take a water taxi tour to Fells Point and party.Stay away from the aquarium! It is very sad that the Nat. Pinball Museum is gone.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

i second AVAM. lexington market is a cheap, urban alternative to the hipster vibe at Cross St Market. i like the aquarium actually, but it's too expensive, something like 25 bucks a person, and crowded on weekends. Fells Point is a good place to wander around, stop in Soundgarden to check out music. if you have a car Hampden is another nice walking neighborhood. If you're into sports, see if the Orioles are playing that weekend. The B&O railroad museum is cool if you're into that sort of thing. If you like history, Ft McHenry is a nice historical site with a great view.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

B&O was one of my favorite places to go to when I was a kid.   The aquarium is ok, but yeah, really expensive.  I always preferred the science center.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Go to Soundgarden in Fells Point for extensive metal collection of CD's. Drink from a 1,000 beer selection at Max's Taphouse, eat crabs at too many to list places all over Baltimore.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

The only thing you need to do is get wasted, avoid arrest and raise hell.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Another must eat in Baltimore: crabcakes and soft shell crabs. Available at MDF?

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

That's a great point.  MDF should serve soft shell crap sandwhiches (I wouldn't eat it, it's like eating a fucking spider between two slices of white bread).

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Is the Walters Art Museum worth checking out?

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Yes, Walters is good (thewalters.org) . I really like it. Also it is free as far as I know. Nice old museum with some unusual art in it. It is in Mt. Vernon part of town which is good to walk around. Restaurants etc. stuff. Not very far from MDF, but probably a cab/bus ride up Charles St. Baltimore Museum of Art (artbma.org) is some mile(s) north of it, and is also free, and bigger, but different kind of place. I think only the special exhibit (Renoir at the moment) costs some bucks. Also it is next to Hopkins University campus. Some bars in the area, too - PJ', Charles Village pub...  Both are in neighbourhoods that are quite safe, in my opinion.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Sorry the double post. Not sure how I did it. Anyways, if someone visits Ft. McHenry, there's plenty of bars/restaurants quite near it on Fort Avenue (http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/bal-to.fort02bmay02,0,3716044.story). Ft. McHenry is nice. You can walk the around it for free, but to get in costs some $s. Walking from inner harbor to Ft. McHenry is too much for most of us. Not sure about buses going there. Baltimore is the home of the American flag and the national anthem. Ft. McHenry is a good place to learn about our history.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

The Charm City Circulator will take you to Ft. McHenry for free. The Banner route will take you right there. It's definitely a cool place if you are into history at all.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Where is Poes grave?

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

depending on where your hotel is, its easy to walk there.  its behind this building by a bunch of other really cool grave sites: the address is 519 W Fayette StBaltimore, MD 21201

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Oh man let's go visit and worship his resting place!

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

I like the suggestions for AVAM, Walter's Art Museum, Sound Garged and Poe's Grave, flying out tomorrow, see you all there!

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

Unless you are arriving a few days before the fest begins or staying a few days after it ends, you will not have time or energy to do anything but the fest itself. Trust me.

Re: Things to do in Baltimore

There's lots of cool stuff to do in Hamden.  This new bar called blue pit bbq & whiskey bar is badass.  Great cocktails, big selection of whiskey, draft and can beers, cool atmosphere, good punk playlist, and a nice backyard patio.  There's also holy frijoles, rocket to Venus, etc, for after fest drinks.   Also, black mess records (extreme metal) and celebrated summer ( punk and little of everything else) are great record shops in Hamden.
